Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born on April 4th April 1972. Her grandmother raised her and she was an only child. Scott attended her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating, she attended Temple University. While working two jobs as a teacher, she was studying secondary education. She planned to become an high school English teacher. However, her dream was short-lived when she quit school after three years of studying and becoming a teachers' aide. A poet by trade, she began performing at live poetry recitals. Later, she joined forces together with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form the group. You Got Me, their collaborative song was written by them. During Roots performance, she revealed herself to be an artist. After that, she was able to negotiate collaborations with people like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She also gained experience as performers on her participation in the Canada tour of the Broadway musical Rent. Also, she was the first signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
